Cannabis and Culture: What Famous People Smoke?

Cannabis culture isn’t reserved just for stoner movies and stereotypes. Marijuana use is becoming more and more common in the entertainment industry, both on-screen and off-screen.

With its popularity on the rise, marijuana use is proving to be an integral part of many artists’ processes and their way to relax or medicate.

Celebrities and Cannabis

Arts and culture aren’t just for entertainment. There are several successful celebrities that not only smoke weed but advocate for use legalization and normalization!

Some of these celebrities even own cannabis companies ranging from flower-producing farms to CBD skin products.

Snoop Dogg

Snoop Dogg is a pillar of weed culture. Snoop has been featuring marijuana use in his music since day one. Many of his most popular singles feature sound bites of bongs and other smoking snippets.

Moreover, Snoop is a staunch advocate for the legalization and normalization of marijuana use. He has always been open about his use and even celebrates it.

Seth Rogan

Seth Rogan is an outspoken weed advocate and enthusiast. Pineapple Express skyrocketed not only Rogan’s career but also the presence of cannabis in current pop culture.

The film showcased an exaggerated modern portrayal of marijuana use, providing an updated look at cannabis culture.

Miley Cyrus

Now sober, Miley Cyrus was previously an enthusiastic supporter and user of cannabis. Featuring portrayals of marijuana plants in her shows, on her wardrobe, and more, Cyrus openly discussed her use of the substance.

Cyrus has since spoken out about her decision to stop smoking but still supports and acknowledges cannabis use for recreation and medication.

“It is no secret that I was into partying in my teens and early 20’s. I have not only smoked, but advocated for weed, I’ve experimented with drugs, my biggest song to date is about dancing on molly and snorting lines in the bathroom.”

Kirsten Dunst

Perhaps one of the more surprising celebrities to enjoy cannabis is Kirsten Dunst. Dunst has been known to discuss her cannabis use openly and positively.

“I’ve never been a major smoker, but I think America’s view on weed is ridiculous. I mean — are you kidding me? If everyone smoked weed, the world would be a better place.”

Like any substance, she agrees that moderation is best but actively supports legalizing cannabis throughout the United States.

Jennifer Lawrence

Known for her goofy demeanor in addition to her A-list acting appearances, Jennifer Lawrence is loved by all. Lawrence has discussed her use of cannabis for recreation and work.

On the set of Don’t Look Up, with director Adam McKay’s blessing, Lawrence used cannabis for a scene involving her character on drugs. Lawrence noted that being high during the scene helped her get into character.

Willie Nelson

Perhaps one of the entertainment industry’s most outspoken cannabis advocates, Willie Nelson is the godfather of weed culture. Nelson has discussed and spoken out on the benefits of cannabis use throughout his career, well before any legalization of marijuana, medical or otherwise, passed.

As legalization pushed through, Nelson commented that “It’s nice to watch it being accepted — knowing you were right all the time about it: that it was not a killer drug, it’s a medicine.”

Morgan Freeman

At the top of Hollywood royalty, Morgan Freeman isn’t just a household name, he’s an icon and an idol. Freeman not only enjoys marijuana but also outwardly recognizes its amazing medical benefits.

Freeman discusses his use of cannabis for his ailments and those of others. “I have fibromyalgia pain in this arm, and the only thing that offers any relief is marijuana. They’re talking about kids who have grand mal seizures, and they’ve discovered that marijuana eases that down to where these children can have a life. That right there, to me, says, ‘Legalize it across the board!’”.

We couldn’t agree more.

All-around badass, Rihanna is constantly flexing her talent across the board. Whether it’s fashion, film, or music, Rihanna continually pushes the limits and proves herself timeless and talented.

Rihanna has been spotted toking up more than once and casually admits to cannabis use for recreational purposes. She enjoys weed and its benefits for her creative process.

Pete Davidson

One of today’s most infamous stoners, SNL star Pete Davidson is one of the most successful pot smokers today. Davidson isn’t just transparent about his cannabis use; he celebrates it.

But Davidson’s use is not just recreational. Suffering from both Crohn’s Disease and Borderline Personality Disorder, Davidson uses cannabis for relief and notes that “it helps more than you can imagine.”

Public Reception

Of course, here in California, just about everyone enjoys marijuana from time to time. However, cannabis in popular culture isn’t just fun facts.

Seeing and hearing celebrities speak out about the positive benefits helps push forward public acceptance. It may be commonplace in California, but it is crucial to normalize cannabis use beyond the sunshine state.
